Outsider bet?

Anyone know which British side has been the most impressive in international qualifiers recently? It’s not Scotland, despite their glorious 97th minute winner against the mighty Liechtenstein…

It’s not England – their recent groups have been pretty straightforward and yet they still failed to qualify in 2008…

And obviously it’s not Wales…

So step forward Northern Ireland.

They may be the smallest country of the lot but that hasn’t stopped them from excelling in recent years and they very nearly made the play-offs in each of the last two campaigns.

In fact, during qualifying for Euro 2008, they took a hugely impressive 20 points from a group containing, amongst others, Spain, Sweden and Denmark.

Picking up where they left off, qualifying for 2012 has also started strongly, with an away victory in Slovenia against a team that impressed at the World Cup.

Next up they take on an Italian side that did anything but impress in South Africa, in a game that looks ripe for a shock. Northern Ireland at home are a formidable obstacle as England, Spain and various other nations know all too well and another famous win on Friday is not beyond them.

Neither is the draw and with both selections looking overpriced, we could be onto a winner by backing Nigel Worthington’s men.

Well that was a great weekend as two of our ante-post tips came in at great prices.

It’s unsurprising then, that Motherwell boss Craig Brown’s first words after his side’s second qualifying round victory were: “Now we go on a marathon trip.”

You can almost sense the excitement.

Suffice to say, I don’t expect The Steelmen to put on much of a show against Norwegian Cup winners Aalesund, so much so that I believe the hosts to be very capable of covering a one goal handicap...

Which is why Bet365’s quote of 11/4 on such an occurrence is the bet of the round.

Scottish football is not what it used to be, believe it or not, there was once a time when the likes of Gazza, Gennaro Gattuso and Paolo Di Canio plied their trade in the SPL. Now the division is filled with players that would struggle to make it into Bolton’s reserve team.

Meanwhile, in the Europa League, Falkirk went down 2-0 to FC Vaduz of Liechtenstein, Aberdeen were pummelled 8- 1 by Czech side Sigma Olomouc and Motherwell exited 6-1 to Steaua Bucharest.

With nothing much changing north of the border over the last 12 months (see Celtics 3-0 defeat last night), I don’t expect the Scottish entrants to fare much better this time around, so they are well worth opposing in any match, particularly when faced with an arduous trip.

As previously mentioned, Motherwell aren’t too keen on their upcoming journey and they also face a team that are well into their domestic season (and performing strongly).

Whereas Craig Brown’s men have played in just two competitive matches this term, and inspired little confidence in eventually grinding out a 2-0 aggregate win over Icelandic minnows Breidablik.

There are all sorts of handicaps to choose from in betting but the most common are the Asian handicap...

And the standard handicap, where one team is given a head-start by the bookmaker.

In the case of Aalesunds vs. Motherwell, the Norwegian side have been made rightful favourites and as such can be backed with a -1 or -2 goal handicap.

Which is well worth a shout if you can foresee another national tragedy like Celtic's surrender last night.

Moto GP Tip

If there’s one thing bookmakers are infamous for (bar making lots of money of course) it’s jumping the gun.

So with the football season not yet underway, the tennis and golf between major tournaments and the cycling not all that interesting I’ve gone for a good outside bet in a sport that’s made for outside bets... Now, let’s face it, a lot of motor sport is boring... I can honestly say, I would rather watch a Sex and the City box-set than an Indy 500 race. Yet Moto GP is the complete opposite...

With lots of bikes... Lots of corners... Lots of crashes... And lots of overtaking.

All of which means that Jorge Lorenzo’s current lead at the top of the standings of 47 points is very catchable... Particularly when you take into account that there are 25 points on offer for a race win and ten races to go.

Lorenzo has undoubtedly impressed during the first half of this season but he has also had it easier than usual, with team-mate Valentino Rossi missing the last five races with a broken leg.

However, Rossi is now back in action and means business, finishing an impressive fifth on his comeback last weekend. This is likely to heap the pressure on Lorenzo, who could become frustrated now that he is back in Valentino’s shadow.

And if that wasn’t enough for the 23 year old, he also has to contend with the fact that this would be his first ever World Championship victory.

With this in mind, it would be no surprise whatsoever if he struggles over the next few weeks and months and there’s every chance that the pressure could also result in an early exit or two...

Or four, as was the case last year. Pedrosa on the other hand can focus on doing as he did last season and finishing strongly. In the second half of 2009 he picked up 32 more points than Lorenzo and just 8 fewer than the all conquering Rossi. Finally, as regards other contenders for the championship crown, don't worry because there aren’t any...

Third placed Dovizioso is the weaker team-mate of Dani Pedrosa and all the others are too far behind to challenge.

So, back Dani Pedrosa to win the Moto GP World Championship at 10.0 with Betfair (or 8/1 elsewhere) and the lengthy odds should ensure that when it gets tight at the top, you'll not only have a potential big priced winner on your hands but an opportunity to lay the bet at a profit...

And who wouldn’t want that?!

Formula One Championship

In Britain we don’t often get generous forecasts...

Normally, we’d be happy enough with occasional sunny spells, followed by brief showers. However, I’ve found one forecast that should really get you excited...

It’d be fair to say that Lewis Hamilton is a rightful favourite for the title having hit a bit of form recently but Button is also picking up points despite a few qualifying wobbles and was extremely impressive at the British Grand Prix, finishing 4th from a 14th place start.

Crucially, with just over half the season gone, both drivers should continue to improve as the McLaren - which came alive in the second half of 2009 - has its early season flaws ironed out. And as the Red Bull team continue to tear each other apart , it seems only a matter of time before one of them flips and goes on a rampage, screaming nonsensically about front chassis.

So, my money goes on the 9/2 straight forecast at Paddy Power for Hamilton to come first and Button second.

World Cup Winner?

Well its Quarter Final time and we are down to the real nitty gritty of the competition now, but can you predict the winner yet? Its a pretty tough line up.

Of the eight teams left in the competition, the only ones I would disregard are Ghana & Paraguay. I wouldn't totally rule out Uruguay, mainly due to an easy(ish) draw and a strikeforce that are on fire for club & country.

We have had only one penalty shoot out so far and with the big guns coming together now surely you cannot rule out another one, in fact you'd be a fool to do so. This makes BET365 offer that they will refund your outright winner bet should your team be eliminated on penalties a pretty good offer.

Before the competition started I backed two teams to win the World Cup, nothing serious, just a few quid to keep interest going. I plumped for Spain & Holland. Well England are out (who really is surprised about that?) but the World Cup goes on without us and surely we can find a few more value bets out there.

Mexico v Uruguay

A quick posting advising on the Mexico v Uruguay game which kicks off at 3pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Now you may or may not be aware but a draw between the two teams virtually assures they will both progress to the second round, as it would require a 5-0 victory for France over South Africa to prevent that happening. After the Super Eagles' opening match against Argentina, we know that the team have a very good goalkeeper in Vincent Enyeama. The Hapoel Tel Aviv stopped denied Lionel Messi a hat-trick of goals and Nigeria will be confident of keeping a clean sheet against Greece. They will also be optimistic of scoring one or two at the other end, especially as they improved as the game wore on at Ellis Park.

Obafemi Martins might get the chance to start alongside Yakubu and surely Lars Lagerback should field the talented Peter Odemwingie.

While Nigeria were reasonably impressive in their opener, the same cannot be said for the Greeks, who look to be a very ordinary team. The South Koreans comfortably beat Otto Rehhagel's men, who laboured throughout the contest and it must have been worrying for the manager to see captain and talisman Giorgios Karagounis labour to the extent that he was withdrawn at half-time. It remains a fact that Greece have never won a World Cup match and this is likely to continue after this match at Bloemfontein.

Day 2.......

Well its day two in South Africa and it is Englands turn to take centre stage (hence the early posting - the pub is calling). If I wasn't English I would be tempted to back the draw @ 10/3 with BETFRED as the Yanks are not that bad a side, just ask Spain whose long unbeaten run was ended by the Americans. Plus we have the unfortunate scenario of a midfield pairing of Gerrard & Lampard rearing its ugly head, but as I said, patriotism rules out a serious punt on the match so I'm giving it a bodyswerve (sort of).

So todays suggested bet is a treble, stick England in (yeah I'm going against all rules of betting here, don't let the heart rule the head etc.) and you have to side with Argentina who are surely good enough to see of the Nigerians. Meanwhile I think Greece have enough in there locker to see off a poor South Korean side whose enduring inability to defend set-pieces gives them an air of vulnerability at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium today. The treble pays just over 6/1 with STAN JAMES.
